Long before cigarettes were being mass produced commercially, people would grow their own tobacco and roll it to smoke. At this time it was pure tobacco with no additives to increase the addictive nature of the product. Once commercial enterprise realized that there was a fortune to be made with tobacco they began doing everything they could to assure that they would always have a market for their product.
